Classical Grammy Nominations

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for this year's Grammy Awards, which will be held in Madison Square Garden on Feb. 23 and broadcast on CBS-TV. The eligibility period is Oct. 1, 2001 through Sept. 30, 2002.

Major labels and indies, famous performers and cult figures, mainstream repertory and offbeat sit side by side in this year's categories. Nominees for Best Classical Album include the San Francisco Symphony's recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 6 under Michael Tilson Thomas, on SFS Media (the orchestra's label); Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony performed by Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony; Arvo Pärt’s Orient & Occident, on ECM’s New Series; and the Takacs Quartet’s Beethoven String Quartets, Opp. 59 and 74, on Decca. Soprano Renee Fleming's Bel Canto was nominated for Classical Album and Classical Vocal Performance. Below is a complete list of nominees:
