New Sounds Live

The New Sounds Live 2008-2009 concert series gets underway on October 28 at the World Financial Center with the U.S. Premiere of Bobby Previte’s incredible multi-media work, “The 23 Constellations of Joan Miró,” musical responses to each of the paintings in the series. Later in the fall, on November 18, New York’s Musica Sacra (the versatile chorus led by Kent Tritle), performs Arvo Pärt’s meditative Stabat Mater and Morton Feldman’s mysterious “Rothko Chapel” (a tribute to the American painter Mark Rothko.)

Also, the New Sounds Live silent film music series returns to the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in February of 2009. Thrill to new scores to classic films, among them a new score to "Man With A Movie Camera" by the Cinematic Orchestra - spacejazz players with a talent for turntablism. Then at Merkin Hall on March 12, 2009, pianist Sarah Cahill performs a collection of newly commissioned peace works from a group of composers (among them Frederic Rzewski, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Yoko Ono, Pauline Oliveros, Peter Garland, Phil Kline, Jerome Kitzke and Kyle Gann) who have written short, pungent piano works in response to the ongoing Iraqi crisis.

On April 2, 2009, hear some works by the people, for the people, at the annual Bang on a Can People’s Commissioning Fund concert at Merkin Hall. Then, the final New Sounds Live concert of the season is on May 14, 2009 at Merkin Hall - a post jazz/post rock double bill where The Bad Plus have some fun kicking down the walls of the jazz establishment, and the Benevento/Mathis/Barr trio (keyboards and two drummers) will test the limits of indie rock.

All of the concerts, hosted by John Schaefer, will be taped for future broadcast on WNYC-FM, and will be available for on-demand streaming at wnyc.org.
