New York, NY —
Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the World Financial Center is the launch date for this season’s New Sounds Live Concert Series. Hear a world premiere WNYC commissioned-work, called “Artificial Afrika” by guitarist/composer/visual artist Vernon Reid. This multi-media work involves some video projections, laptop processing, and Vernon’s own guitar-wielding skills. That starts at 8PM.
As a rare thrill, there’s a New Sounds Live broadcast of the American Premiere of the choral version of David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work, “Little Match Girl Passion,” as well as György Ligeti's Lux Aeterna. That’s at 8PM on November 8, 2009 , featuring Harold Rosenbaum's New York Virtuoso Singers and is live from our very own Jerome L. Greene Space.
February 10-12, 2010, the New Sounds Live silent film music series returns to the World Financial Center's Winter Garden with new scores to classic Yasujiro Ozu films. We’ll hear a new score to “Passing Fancy” by cellist/composer Lori Goldston (of the Black Cat Orchestra), along with pianist/composer's Wayne Horvitz’s score for “Woman Of Tokyo,” and composer/pianist Robin Holcomb’s accompaniment for “That Night’s Wife.” On February 24, 2010, hear some works by the people, for the people, at the annual Bang on a Can People’s Commissioning Fund concert at Merkin Hall. This concert will be webcast on Q2, WQXR's new music stream.
On March 11, 2010, at 7:30PM the quartet Ethel performs music by Jacob TV. Then, the final New Sounds Live concert of the season is on May 20, 2010 at Merkin Hall. Hear new songs by jazz-tinged chamber pop chanteuse Elizabeth And The Catapult, trigonometrical melodist Ed Pastorini, and pop-classical chameleon Gabriel Kahane.
All of the concerts are hosted by John Schaefer. With the exception of the LIVE broadcast on Sunday, November 8, 2009, all will be taped for future broadcast on WNYC.
