John Schaefer hosts the 7th Annual People’s Commissioning Fund Concert where the Bang on a Can All-Stars perform three world premieres commissioned by the people. Hear the spare and intense work of Yoav Gal, the quirky and driving music of Annie Gosfield, and the ecstatic and witty music of composer/drummer John Hollenbeck. Plus. the New York premiere of a new work by Ornette Coleman commissioned for the All-Stars by the Mary Flagler Cary Trust and the performance of a work by Brazilian jazz marvel Hermeto Pascoal. Bonus live introductions and interviews with host John Schaefer will be taped from the stage for later broadcast on New Sounds.

Yoav Gal
focuses on the marriage of music and image as a central theme in his growing list of works. His creations, sometimes described as “Living-Room Operas” or “Indie Opera,” involve a wide range of media such as video, animation, theatre and the Internet. Gal is a recipient of grants from the American Music Center, Harvestworks, Franklin Furnace, and BCAT/Brooklyn – Rotunda Gallery

Annie Gosfield
has created a body of work that includes large-scale compositions, chamber pieces, electronics music, video projects, and music for dance. Her work often explores the inherent beauty of non-musical sounds, and is inspired by diverse sources such as machines, destroyed pianos, warped 78 records, and detuned radios. She uses traditional notation, improvisation, and extended techniques to create a sound world that eliminates the boundaries between music and noise, while emphasizing the unique qualities of each performer. Annie lives in New York City and divides her time between performing on piano and sampler with her own group and composer for many ensembles and soloists

John Hollenbeck ’s
versatility as a percussionist and composer is revealed in a body of work that challenges countless boundaries. Performances with Fred Hersh, Kenny Wheeler, and Bob Brookmeyer have showcased Hollenbeck’s melodic and sensitive small-group jazz drumming. His unique approach to big band work is evident as a member of Bob Brookmeyer’s New Art Orchestra, the BMI Orchestra, Jim McNeely’s Tentet and as a frequent guest with the Village Vanguard Orchestra. Hollenbeck’s latest recording, A Blessing, is nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award.

Bang on a Can All-Stars
Named Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year for 2005, the Bang on a Can All-Stars have gained an international reputation for extreme virtuosity and an utterly unique sound, powered by their unusual combination of clarinets, electric guitar, cello, bass, keyboards, and percussion. Each year fans and critics across the globe anticipate the All-Stars’ ultra-dynamic live performances, not to mention their recordings of the latest, most innovative music. Freely crossing the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world, and experimental music, the six-member ensemble plays music from uncharted territories, shattering the definition of what concert music is today.

The All-Stars' flexibility reflects the vision of the three Bang on a Can artistic directors (Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe), who believe in the communicative power of a wide range of music from a new generation of composers and performers.

Recent and upcoming BoaC All-Stars projects include their landmark recording of Brian Eno’s ambient classic Music for Airports, live performances with Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Don Byron, and much more. With occasional homages to living masters, the heart of their repertoire remains the sound of a new generation.

The BoaC All-Stars appear annually in New York at venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Miller Theatre, and Merkin Hall. Other recent appearances include BBC Proms, Sydney Olympics Festival, Venice Biennale, Holland Festival, Davies Symphony Hall in SF, Hancher Auditorium, Iowa, and UCLA Live. The All-Stars now record on Cantaloupe Music and have released past recordings on Sony, Universal and Nonesuch.
