The Passion Of Joan Of Arc
directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, is considered to be one of cinema’s supreme achievements. Thought to have been destroyed in warehouse fires, a perfect copy was discovered recently in a mental institution in Oslo, Norway and lovingly restored. With its raw emotional power, its naturalistic acting and an utterly contemporary visual style, The Passion of Joan of Arc looks like it was made only yesterday (although it was actually released in 1928.) It is a haunting, extraordinary film. Based on the historical transcripts of the actual trial, Dreyer’s masterpiece is an eviscerating experimental film of faith, suffering and redemption.
THIS FILM IS INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES.
Voices of Light
by Richard Einhorn
is a confluence of brilliance joining the hauntingly beautiful, eponymous oratorio by Richard Einhorn, with Carl Theodor Dreyer’s cinematic classic The Passion of Joan of Arc, the unearthly vocals of Anonymous 4, new music group Ensemble Sospeso and the prolific New Amsterdam Singers. Last staged in 1999 in New York City, this critically acclaimed performance has brought sold-out houses to their feet in dozens of major venues across the globe.
Richard Einhorn
began composing at age 15 and has been doing so full-time since 1982. With numerous film scores, song cycles, chamber works, and a ballet to his credit, he is one of only a handful of living composers whose music has not only connected with a worldwide audience but has also received universal critical praise.
Anonymous 4
combines musical, literary and historical scholarship with performance to create programs of song and prose. Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, they have amassed an unrivaled medieval repertoire, as well as working with contemporary composers on world premieres.
The Ensemble Sospeso
is a group of soloists producing concerts of contemporary music at the highest standard. The Ensemble’s objective is to bring music written since 1960 to new and diverse audiences in live performance through collaborations with poets, painters, filmmakers, dancers and other artists.
New Amsterdam Singers
is a chorus of 70 skilled singers that specializes in a cappella and double chorus performance. Known for the variety and interest of its repertoire, ranging from the 15th century to the present day contemporary and commissioned works, the chorus’ shows in New York City and abroad have won critical acclaim.
