New York, NY —
There's beauty in wastewater. At least the city thinks so. Last night it flicked on special bluish lights on eight stainless steel wastewater digesters in the Newtown Creek plant.
Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Emily Lloyd says the digesters are sometimes called eggs because of their shape.
LLOYD: The digester eggs are shaped that way because it works very well for the process. It turns out that's really a stunning industrial form, I think. And so then cladding them in steel and lighting them is sort of a logical next step.
REPORTER: The light display will continue indefinitely. Starting this fall, DEP will offer public tours of the Newtown Creek digester eggs, which also offer great views of the city.
