New York, NY —
There was little or no controversy surrounding the adoption of the party platform at yesterday’s opening session of the Republican National Convention. Although it’s not new, the renewal of the GOP's opposition to all abortions, with no exceptions for saving the life of the mother, or after rape or incest once again gave some New York delegates pause. But not Colleen Ashton of Queens.
ASHTON: I think that’s a really tough question. I think a lot of people would struggle with that. I just really believe in life, and I think that I’m fully in line with the Republicans’ views on that.
REPORTER: Senator John McCain has said he supports exceptions for rape, incest and saving the life of the mother. His running mate, Sarah Palin, has said she opposes all abortions without exception.
The platform also focuses on immigration calling for a border fence and English as the country's official language.
On climate change, it acknowledges a human role in increased carbon emissions but advocates environmental policies that are "global in nature."
