Koppell Seeks Change of Term Limit Law

For weeks, there's been speculation about whether city lawmakers will repeal voter-approved term limits. Now, as WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports, one councilman is willing to handle the political hot potato.

REPORTER: Bronx Councilman Oliver Koppell, a former state Attorney General, says term limits are undemocratic. He says New Yorkers who want to give Mayor Bloomberg a third term should have that chance.

KOPPELL: But people should definitely have the chance to vote for someone, especially in the instance where they think he is doing a very good job.

REPORTER: Twice, New Yorkers have voted to limit municipal office holders to two consecutive terms. The buzz over a Council repeal was set off after Mayor Bloomberg met with newspaper publishers floating the third term trial balloon. Dick Daddey, Executive Director of the good government group Citizens Union says it would be self-serving for the Council and Mayor to overturn voter approved term limits.

DADEY: We think the term limits should stand as it is now unless the voters vote to change it.

REPORTER: Meanwhile, Councilman Koppell says he'll press forward with the bill even if it doesn't get the thumbs up from Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
