New York, NY —
As the city moves forward with a rezoning plan for Coney Island, some groups on the sidelines want to make sure it's as bold and eclectic as the place itself. The Center for an Urban Future surveyed 23 architects, historians, writers and even a video game expert about their vision for Brooklyn's storied seaside. Director Jonathan Bowles says many of their recommendations are similar.
BOWLES: You've got to build on the great history of Coney Island - don't lose that - to better transportation connections. So many people talked about ferries or a fast train that would go to Coney island thereby enabling more tourists.
REPORTER: Bowles says other respondents want to ensure the re-zoned Coney Island is affordable for all New Yorkers.
The Municipal Arts Society is holding workshops today and tomorrow to develop designs and interim uses for Coney Island. They'll present those ideas at the BAM Cafe in Brooklyn Monday evening.
