New York, NY —
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand continues her courtship of the public. Yesterday she met for nearly two hours with Hispanic elected officials concerned about her stand on immigration. WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.
GILLIBRAND: Thank you for your guidance. Thank you for your advice. I feel we will work together...
ARROYO: Yes, we are going to work...
REPORTER: Standing before the cameras Senator Gillibrand was deeply deferential to Hispanic leaders like Assembly member Carmen Arroyo, and said her earlier, conservative views on immigration would likely shift. Some officials say she needs to repudiate anti-immigrant rhetoric, and ask the president to stop immigration raids and deportations. As a representative, Gillibrand co-sponsored border patrol legislation and opposed amnesty - but Assemblyman Jose Peralta says she needs to change, fast.
PERALTA: It's politics. And just like she changed her point of view on gay marriage, she is slowly evolving and changing her view on immigrant issues. We hope that translates into something positive. Again, we have to wait and see, and see how she votes.
REPORTER: And if her votes don't go their way, Peralta says Hispanics will back another candidate in next year's election. For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
