At about this time of year as the green markets are just beginning to offer local produce, Pulitzer prize winning Poet Philip Levine is reminded of this poem by Galway Kinnell. Philip Levine divides his time between New York City and Fresno, California . He teaches at New York University. His most recent book of poems is called The Mercy. About 45 years ago on a Spring afternoon in Fresno, California, Philip Levine read the poem "The Avenue Bearing the Initial of Christ into the New World" for the first time. The poem was Galway Kinnell's and Levine shares his reactions then and now.
