NYC and Pedicabs Reach Deal on Licensing

Cyclists interested in getting a pedicab license need only apply. City officials and bicycle taxi owners agreed yesterday on licensing and safety requirements after a year of wrangling.

Under the new plan, there would be no cap on the number of licenses but there are only 60 days to apply. The three-wheeled bicycle taxis are subject to the same rules as regular bikes, but under the new regulations they would also need insurance and inspections for seat belts, brakes, and turn signals.

Chad Marlow is a lawyer for The New York City Pedicab Owners' Association, and says he is "thrilled" with the new agreement.
