The old Meatpacking District will soon be home to a new 10-story glass, mixed-use, retail and commercial building.

The structure received the green light from the city to go 24 percent higher than current zoning allows. Andrew Berman with the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation says the design is out-of-character with the neighborhood.

BERMAN: If anyone's familiar with 7 World Trade Center, its the same architect and it will look very, very similar. And regardless of what you think of that design, I think very few people would say that its what you really picture in the Meat Packing District.

REPORTER: A spokesman for the developer says the building will be lower than many others in the Meatpacking District, including the Standard Hotel. He says it'll also conform with the skyline being built around the High Line.

The developer, Romanoff Equities, argued that since the High Line cuts through the property, taking full advantage of the site was a challenge. The Board of Standards and Appeals granted the developer a smaller building than the one it proposed.
