This July the city plans to close 16 daycare programs in leased properties where it says rents are too high. The move is supposed to save $16 million by 2012, but parents and daycare workers are fuming.

Latisha Melvin, is the parent of a 2-year-old boy and works two jobs. She relies on her daycare in Jamaica, Queens and says it's tough to find good daycare in her area. "I was on a list, we waited for at least a year. Finally, he got on and he's been there for months and he's been doing well. My hands would be tied if there was no place else for him to go," Melvin says.

The city's Administration for Children's Services oversees subsidized daycare and says the leases on the properties cost up to $400,000 annually. Nearly 800 children attend the programs and ACS says it will work with parents to find other slots for their kids.
