Defendant in Russian Spy Case to be Released on Bail

The U.S. government announced on Tuesday that it plans to appeal a decision in the Russian spy case that releases a prominent Spanish language journalist on bail. The El Diario journalist is Vicky Pelaez. She is accused of passing letters to the Russian Intelligence on behalf of her husband, Juan Lazaro, another defendant in the case.

But lawyers for Pelaez say they're planning on getting her released today, pending a possible detention hearing in federal court. "We're waiting to have the electronic device fitted on her ankle, and we're ready to bail her out," said her attorney John Rodriguez. He said that was the only bail condition that prevented Pelaez's expected release on Tuesday.

Rodriguez added that his client has been very emotionally shaken since her arrest. "Oh, I can tell you there are ups and downs. It's very difficult," he said. "Any time you are charged as a defendant by the full weight and force of the United States of America, that's a heavy weight to bear."

A magistrate judge decided last Thursday that Pelaez could be released on $250,000 bail with electronically-monitored home detention. She's the only one of the 10 suspected spies arrested in the U.S. who was granted bail. Defendant Christopher Metsos was granted bail after his arrest in Cyprus and has since disappeared.

The suspects in the case are charged with being part of a spy ring that prosecutors say for the past decade has engaged in secret global travel with false passports, secret code words, fake names, invisible ink and encrypted radio.
