New York, NY —
Drivers in some parts of the city can now feed meters with a prepaid card instead of quarters. About 400 meters have taken the cards in Long Island City, Queens for several months.
REPORTERS: That pilot program is being expanded to Manhattan, Brooklyn and other parts of Queens. Mayor Bloomberg says new technology could be used for other meter improvements in the future.
BLOOMBERG: The advantage of modern technology is that you could charge different rates at different times or different days if you wanted to. Having the technology gives you those kinds of things.
REPORTERS: The meters are identifiable by a yellow sticker. Cards available in $20 and $50 amounts can be bought at two "Citystore" locations in Manhattan, on the web at nyc.gov, or by calling 311.
