New York, NY —
Merchants at the Bronx Terminal Market say they will stop paying their rent to protest a redevelopment plan that will displace them.
REPORTER: The Gateway Center mall is to be built at the current site, near Yankee Stadium. It's been endorsed by the local community board and has the support of the Mayor, but Community activist Greg Bell says they don't speak for the merchants.
BELL: If there's no guarantee that community residents will be a part of this project; that entrepreneurial experiences in the Bronx will be a part of this project that the per capita income of Bronx residents is going to increase because of this project that you have to wonder if it's good for the Bronx and if it's not good for the Bronx then it's not good for the city.
REPORTER: The merchants have also sued to stop the project and are calling for an investigation into how developer, the Related Companies, got ownership of the market site from the city. Related says it has nothing to hide and the city's office of economic development promises the project will create five thousand new jobs.
