Democratic New Jersey senator Robert Torricelli withdrew from the Senate race in an emotional speech on September 30th. In New Jersey the Democratic Party scrambled to come up with a list of possible Senate candidates to take his place on the ballot, while Republicans vowed to block any attempt to replace Torricelli, saying it was too late according to the state's election law. The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to intervene despite GOP objections and Frank Lautenberg is now on the Senate ballot challenging Republican candidate Douglas Forrester.

Forrester: Who Is He?
10/22/2002
US Senate candidate Doug Forrester is struggling to define himself in the eyes
of New Jersey voters. Before Senator Robert Torricelli dropped out of the race,
the Republican candidate often emphasized that he was not Torricelli -- and
did well in the polls, partly as a result. Now polls show that half of likely
voters don't know enough about Forrester to form an opinion. WNYC's Bob Hennelly
