Without Tram, Roosevelt Island Harder to Get to for Some

Roosevelt Island residents are not happy about having to wait until Fall at the earliest for their tram to start running again. The cable car system has been shut-down since a problem with its electrical systems stranded 68 people for 11 hours last month.

REPORTER: Some older residents like Ann Shoats say they've had a hard time leaving the island because the subway isn't always accessible.

SHOATS: The escalator's not working, the elevator can't go down. You've got to walk. And I'm an old lady I dont need to be walking up and down those stairs.

REPORTER: The head of the island's operating corporation says extra buses have been added and the city is looking into ferry service. The cause of last month's failure was faulty wiring. Officials are planning to overhaul the main and backup power supplies which is why they say the tram can't reopen until September at the earliest.
