Bronx Man Wielding Ax Shot by Police

Police shot and killed a 62-year-old Bronx man who was wielding an ax Saturday.

REPORTER: Anatoly Dimitriev was the third man to die during a confrontation with city police in the past three weeks. Neighbors say Dimitriev was mentally ill. They called the police when they saw him throwing bottles out his apartment window and wielding the ax.

Police say when officers arrived, Dimitriev had barricaded himself in his apartment. He fled through a window onto a sixth-floor fire-escape. Police say they shot Dimitriev when he refused to put down the ax.

On Wednesday, officers shot and killed 19-year-old Timur Person during another confrontation in the Bronx. An officer wrestling Person to the ground claims to have felt a gun in the Person's pocket. Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion and community leaders are calling on residents to remain calm and withhold judgment until an investigation is completed.
