New York, NY —
The dolphin rescue in East Hampton, Long Island is over. Eight dolphins were rescued and 12 died in Northwest Harbor Cove.
The dolphins apparently chased a school of bait fish into the cove back on Saturday, January 13th.
A week-long rescue effort of trying to lure and herd the dolphins out of the cove saved 8 animals. Chuck Bowman of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says a lack of food in the cove and the frigid temperatures eventually killed those that couldn't get through an inlet that connect the cove to Gardiner's Bay and the open ocean.
