Bronx Protests Against Proposed Jail

This afternoon, several Bronx groups will rally against a 2000 bed jail in their neighborhood. WNYC's Elaine Rivera reports.

An eclectic group of residents, elected officials and activists will march to protest the proposed $375 million jail in the Oak Point section of the South Bronx. Organizers say they want the city to postpone a scheduled environmental impact hearing next week. They charge that the community was left out of the process.

A Corrections Department spokesman said the city wants to purchase 22 acres of industrial waterfront for the jail. The new facility, officials say, would replace outdated housing at Rikers Island. They also say transportation to the new site would be easier for family members and lawyers to see detained inmates. For WNYC, I'm Elaine Rivera.
