Fat and Calorie Rules Go Into Effect

A ban on trans fat-laden cooking oils and a rule requiring fast-food restaurants to post calories on the menu has officially gone into effect in New York City, but few eateries are complying with the calorie policy.

McDonald's and Burger King are among the chains refusing to follow the new menu rule, which would require that certain fast-food restaurants list calorie counts next to menu items in type that is at least as large as the price.

City officials are not planning to issue fines for violations of the new rules until October first. And most chains seem to be holding out in hopes that a federal lawsuit will get the calorie rule thrown out before then.
