New York, NY —
Government Spitzer's latest plan to create a three tiered driver's license system has immigrants in some neighborhoods feeling disappointed and confused about whether they would apply for the new license. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has more from Corona, Queens.
REPORTER: Marco Ramos is from Mexico. He has no driver's license and says he was looking forward to applying for one until the Spitzer Administration announced the three tier system. Now, he fears his license will be very different making him a target for discrimination by police:
RAMOS: Va hacer mucho muy differente porque te van a discriminar con eso casi.
REPORTER: Ramos said he would have to think very seriously before applying for the license. For Hugo Graniso, the decision was more clear cut. He says he won't accept the license and would rather remain without one.
RAMOS: No tengo licensia pero no la aceptaria
REPORTER: Graniso accused the governor of bending to pressure from Albany Republicans who remain adamantly opposed to allowing undocumented immigrants to get licensed. The Spitzer administration says the delineation between licenses is not based on immigration status but rather on whether the license meets certain federal guidelines. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
