Friday, June 13, 2008

Last night John McCain held a town hall meeting in Manhattan, and WNYC's political director Andrea Bernstein was there. She talks about his New York visit--plus the latest campaign news.

so is the Enron loophole and the ending of the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, as both having been put through by Phil Gramm, [THAT Phil Gramm] John McCain's economic advisor, finally starting to become obvious to anyone else besides those of us who are already tired of being angry? [ reference article link is at

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24844889/

this is what led to the deregulation of financial markets in the same way Enron was able to rip off California, the same people/traders are reportedly involved, including Phil Gramm, who as Vice Chairman and a registered lobbyist for UBS.

As long as McCain is using the same people for advice that Bush believes in, mainly extreme deregulation, or what they like to call the "free market", he is, in fact, Bush3.

And for those of you who believe in the "free market", money, by it's nature, isn't free, and has different valuations, therefore, there is no such thing as a totally "free market". There are always rules.

  • [2] michael winslow from INWOOD June 13, 2008 - 10:06AM

How come McCain is getting a free pass on the Keating 5?

Not to mention he really isn't a war hero. He was a terrible pilot and crashed his plane it wasn't shot down.

So he was tortured so what?

  • [3] Leonardo Andres June 13, 2008 - 10:07AM

Well i am not a fan of obama. but the repubican party couldn't have picked a worse person to go up against him. Mccain open's his mouth and makes himself sound like an idiot. Im sorry to say.

  • [4] Joe Corrao from Brooklyn June 13, 2008 - 10:10AM

    WNYC is soooooooo pushing Obama...

  • [5] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:12AM

Brian - too bad you did not put a separate comments section for the discussion with Andrea - You have been part of the rumor spreading - Also, that racist elements within the Democratic party who supported Hillary, as well as key surrogates of Hillary's campaign were the ones who started many of these rumors - ESPECIALLY an under the radar campaign creating fear with Jews; the supposed video of Michelle out there; the Muslim smear; the drug use smear; and the Obama is against women and abortion smear - Some of these came DIRECTLY from the Clinton campaign

  • [6] Ben Greenfield from Western Mass June 13, 2008 - 10:13AM

Did you notice the Fox bug that described MS. Obama

    As Obama's baby mama?

  • [7] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:13AM

    It's an easy voting decision:

If you want to elect Michelle O-Ba-Ma to be America's 'First Lady'... vote for O-Ba-Ma.

  • [8] Paulo from Paterson, New Jersey June 13, 2008 - 10:14AM

Last night's event was a closed event. It was not a public event.

I know because I was supposed to go as a representative of a non-partisan, anti-poverty group and we were told we would not be allowed to go.

  • [9] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:15AM

Michael Post #2 _ You are right - according to the mainstream ruling class and Republicans, what if McCain was tortured? so what? - We don't think its a big deal when we do it to others. Why is that such a big deal that it was done to McCain - It is true too that while in the Navy he was so disobedient and that the crash of his plane was due to his hot headness

  • [10] flit from NYC area June 13, 2008 - 10:15AM

Why not call the "Obama is a Muslim" lie what it is...a LIE!

It is not a "false rumor", as Brian said.

It is a deliberate lie put out to scare voters.

  • [11] Chris O from New York City June 13, 2008 - 10:15AM

I like how instantly the liberal wing loves Obama and moderates and conservatives don't. I remember oh so long ago during the primary campaign that his health plan was too conservative compared to Hillary's, that he was saying good things about Reagan, etc. so Dems should not vote for him. But now he is from the liberal wing...

  • [12] B.R. from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:16AM

It's always nice to see WNYC/Lehrer continue their unabashed endorsement of Barack Obama and simultaneous abrogation of McCain.

  • [13] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:17AM

Jesse Califano Post #7 - What is wrong with having an educated, articulate, loving mother and wife who HAPPENS to be black as first lady?

I guess it would be more appealing to you to have a Soprano-like bimbo WHITE wife as first lady - with the big hair, the jewely and the polyester sweat suits - That would be classy!

  • [14] antonio from park slope June 13, 2008 - 10:17AM

Ahh the hacks and no nothings racists are out and about on the board already..Thanks Jesse

  • [15] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 10:18AM

    Leo Queens

what is ur source for the Hillary surrogates rumors

  • [16] Steve from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:18AM

McCain is a dangerous and confused old man - a Bush-enabler of the worst sort. He will continue to pile up the bodies and surely will attack Iran. As well, he'll continue the national security state we've become. Like Bush, he'll fill the federal bench with subpar reactionary judges who will finish off the Bill of Rights.

  • [17] Leonardo Andres June 13, 2008 - 10:19AM

    #12 x 2

This will be a couple of months of wnyc loves obama, well really all the news outles are going to act like this. Except for you know who of course they are going to do quite the opposite.

this is why i do not give money to wnyc because i thought they were supposed to be the "fair and balanced" of the bunch.

  • [18] Bryan S from greenpoint brooklyn June 13, 2008 - 10:19AM

Joe Corrao: I totally agree with you. I love wnyc and listen to it everyday, but I haven't heard more lopsided reporting on a presidential race in all my life. It's getting pretty old as a matter of fact. I have a hard time believing that Mccain is so off the mark to warrant such reporting.

Brian Leher, please be a bit more honest in your reporting.

Oh, and also, these slander videos are mostly from propaganda machines on both sides, not necessarily from the nominees.

  • [19] Mike from Bellport June 13, 2008 - 10:19AM

McCain was tortured, but he supports the use of torture, so I guess it wasn't that big of a deal.

  • [20] B.R. from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:19AM

Andrea Bernstein's resume must read like:

    * Barack Obama 2008 (2007 - Current)

    Press Secretary

    * WNYC/NPR (20?? - Current)

    'Political Correspondent'

  • [21] Paula from Morristown, NJ June 13, 2008 - 10:20AM

Last night's townhall meeting was as set-up and a publicity stunt for McCain as his walk thru the Baghdad market.

  • [22] antonio from park slope June 13, 2008 - 10:20AM

#12 I guess you must have just started listening to the bl show, because during the primary it was all H-dog all the time...

  • [23] bob from huntington June 13, 2008 - 10:20AM

mccain has to talk up his bi-partisan credentials because the simple reality is (and he well knows it) that after the next election there won't be many republicans left in congress.

  • [24] Katie from Forest Hills June 13, 2008 - 10:21AM

Can't we all just get along?

Can you guys discuss points without resorting to attacks?

#13 Leo, you make some good points in other posts but this is not representative of them.

Tell us a bit more about the group you represent and why you couldn't go to the meeting last night.

I was under the impression that last night was a public meeting and a potential debate with Obama?

When will the debates between Obama and McCain start?

  • [25] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:21AM

    False Rumors? -

Everyone KNOWS how much Michelle O-Ba-Ma absolutely LOVES White America!

Oh Yes- and White America is going to vote for O-Ba-Ma just so that we can have Michelle for our 'First Lady'! (Oh Yeah!)

  • [26] acs from bklyn June 13, 2008 - 10:22AM

    Brian,

Maybe this seems a little thing but I really don't think it is. When discussing dealing with rumors and misconceptions, Andrea Bernstein just said Michelle Obama made a comment about "not being proud of America." This is false and exactly the problem that they are up against. Andrea left out the "really." The phrase was "really proud", not meaning "proud for real" but instead meaning extra proud, over the top proud. It's an important distinction and something that people seem to be going out of their way to misinterpret.

  • [27] Repub101 from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:22AM

I think one of the main draws for Obama is simply his speaking ability. After 8 years of George W., a really weak public speaker, Obama sounds like a genius following him. People are very taken in by charismatic speakers, but even more so when that speaker follows a weaker one. It's superficial, but a very powerful draw.

  • [28] Chris O from New York City June 13, 2008 - 10:23AM

You paranoid whinters crying about media bias are the most biased people on the planet and only those that cater to those biases are fair, in your very warped view.

  • [29] Moiz Kapadia from NJ June 13, 2008 - 10:24AM

    Andrea,

Can you please take a look at this CNN article which crunches some numbers about the tax policies about both Obama and McCain?

    http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/11/news/economy/candidates_taxproposals_tpc/index.htm?cnn=yes

    Thanks!

    Moiz

Hjs Post #15 - I will provide links to some of them:

It was reported very widely in the media that Clinton's campaign distributed thousands of flyers in NH on the weekend before the primary accusing Obama of not supporting abortion rights - yet she never brought this up directly in debates. There is a very influential financial contritutor who is part of her campaign out of California who sent emails to Jewish voters insinuating that Obama was a threat to Jews and Israel and spreading rumors that he was associated with Palestinians; Hillary saying "He is not a muslin,...As far as I know!'; His campaign manager in NH and Senator Bob Kerrey going on the air repeating that Obama was a cocaine user and insinuating that he was a drug dealer.

The black founder of BET stating IN FRONT of Hillary that Obama back in the 90's was doing "who knows what in the neighborhood..but he gives us some clues in his book" or something to that effect.

I'm compiling this list to mail to Senator Clinton and to the NY Democratic machine asking that they apologize for each and everyone of these incidents!

  • [31] Katie from Forest Hills June 13, 2008 - 10:25AM

We have to fix the party and support Obama as our candidate to affect change!

Let's make history and elect the first black President.

Obama is from Chicago, he knows when to be rough and when to be soft and strong. He is our candidate and let's support him!

  • [32] Paulo from Paterson, New Jersey June 13, 2008 - 10:25AM

You certainly can't say that BL and WNYC are impartial, but at the same time, are they accurate? They might accentuate positives of Democrats while playing down the negatives and vise versa for the Republicans. But when you listen to the kind of vicious, foundless rhetoric coming from the right-wing media, you certainly can't call this the liberal equivalent. There ARE liberal equivalents, but this is not one of them.

  • [33] LJo from Westchester June 13, 2008 - 10:26AM

    Brian/Andrea

Reproductive rights! supreme court appointments! Unitary Presidency!

Where is McCain on RU486? Plan B?

You are too easy on him & missing alot.

  • [34] Leonardo Andres June 13, 2008 - 10:26AM

Chris O, Im sorry but that does not make any sense. I dont watch fox news because they are biased, I dont watch any of the other network news because they are biased. I listen to wnyc because it is a public funded radio station. and expected to be non biased and not affected by the corportate interest that affect most corporate owned news outlets. but i was wrong and this has been proven all through out this presidential race.

  • [35] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:27AM

OH! - Michelle is 'REALLY' proud... well now, that changes everything!(?)

What a Joke- WNYC'ers have to get a handle on the concept of accepting 'REAL-ity'!

  • [36] Bill from New York June 13, 2008 - 10:27AM

Jesse, WTH with the "O-Ba-Ma"? Do you insert the hyphens when you speak about him? Do you think people think you're being funny?

  • [37] Steve from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:28AM

    From the Independant (UK):

Then McCain's father, John, led the US invasion of the Dominican Republic in 1965, at a time when there was a conflict on the Caribbean island. On one side, there were forces loyal to Juan Bosch, the democratically elected left-wing President who was committed to land redistribution and helping the poor. On the other side, there were forces who had overthrown the elected government and looked nostalgically to the playboy tyranny of Rafael Trujillo. John McCain Snr intervened to ensure the supporters of the democratic government were crushed, bragging that it taught the natives "how to behave themselves". He saw this as part of a wider mission, where the US would take over Britain's role as a "world empire".

These beliefs drive McCain today. He brags he would be happy for US troops to remain in Iraq for 100 years, and declares: "I'm not at all embarrassed of my friendship with Henry Kissinger; I'm proud of it." His most thorough biographer – and recent supporter – Matt Welch concludes: "McCain's programme for fighting foreign wars would be the most openly militaristic and interventionist platform in the White House since Teddy Roosevelt... [it] is considerably more hawkish than anything George Bush has ever practised." With him as president, we could expect much more aggressive destabilisation of Venezuela and Bolivia – and more.

  • [38] JG from New York City June 13, 2008 - 10:28AM

If the media is so biased in favor of Obama, why did it report so heavily on the Rev. Wright sermons but devote no attention whatsoever or even ask McCain about reportedly calling his wife the "c" word (rhymes with hunt) in front of reporters? I think that level of misogyny is disqualifying, but I've never heard McCain have to answer for it.

  • [39] Robert from NYC June 13, 2008 - 10:29AM

Why don't we consider discussing the recent proposal to impeach GWB. Laws were broken, lies were spewed, a war was illegally declared and the Constitution has been ignored and shoved aside crudely and no one is discussing seriously the impeachment of this administration!

  • [40] Leonardo Andres June 13, 2008 - 10:29AM

    Katie:

Im sorry but I personally do not find it historic that we are going to elect our first bi-racial president. because I am not obsessed with race. I rather make history by voting for someone who is actually going to bring some change to the status quoa. This two do not bring this change.

and as far as i know Chicago was or is one of the most corrupt governments that exist in the U.S.A.

  • [41] scnex from harlem June 13, 2008 - 10:29AM

every time a "black" human says something about the state of this 'dis-union' a "white" perceives this as some form of racism agenda when you look at it at the statements core it is just a retort of the racism of 'non-human' white agenda.... your pendant guess...

  • [42] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:29AM

Katie #24 - I apologize - It's a bit over the top - But I'm forcing these racists like Jesse to come out and be honest about their dislike of the Obamas - Is it that Jesse does not like tall women; or doesn't like women with college degrees; women who love and have a good relationship with their husband; women who adore their daughters; or women who are confident; or women who happen to be black?

Most blacks do not fit the negative stereotypes that we have been trained to react to.. and is about time that we start challenging these negative disrespectful remarks - We can make negative comments about all types of people based on stereotypes - but Jesse shows blatant racism

  • [43] B.R. from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:30AM

    #30

Your comment is stating that the next President's primary qualification should be his ethnicity.

If Alan Keyes was running on the GOP ticket against Hillary would you say the same and vote for Keyes because he would be 'the first black President'?

    No, you wouldnt.

    Stuff White People Like...

  • [44] Chris O from New York City June 13, 2008 - 10:31AM

Since last night was a closed event, it should not be called a town hall. But I guess the pro-McCain biased media, including this station, presented it as such.

  • [45] Paulo from Paterson, New Jersey June 13, 2008 - 10:33AM

    LJo,

You bring up a great point about the Unitary Presidency.

I think everybody needs to talk about this. I think all of the candidates need to be asked about this, and ultimately I think it more than anything else is the most important question facing the continued survival of the Republic.

The American people seem to have forgotten that we're supposed to be choosing an administrator. Not an elected Emperor. And the threat of that, of course, can come from either side.

Bush didn't want to be king. He has shown though that one only need reach out and snatch the crown.

  • [46] Steve from Manhattan June 13, 2008 - 10:34AM

Forgot the link - mea culpa: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/johann-hari/johann-hari-dont-be-fooled-by-the-myth-of-john-mccain-773072.html

  • [47] Katie from Forest Hills June 13, 2008 - 10:35AM

    # 42,

I am voting for Obama because he is Democrat like me. I want change. Obama is the next President and will bring sweeping change as a combination of FDR's Progressive changes and saving the middle class with his New Deal and JFK's fresh ideas and concepts.

America has a bright future ahead of it with Obama and it has nothing to do with race.

I want a rough man from Chicago for President, not an man whom is collecting benefits as a Prisoner of War and claims he is too "disabled." Won't that affect his competence to be President?

This is not toy soldiers game, this is running a nation and hot seat of International politics. I want America to continue not run into the ground with the war on Iraq, the middle class' destruction and "war on terrorism" and our "occupation" in Iraq.

  • [48] Paulo from Paterson, New Jersey June 13, 2008 - 10:35AM

    Chris O,

Well, Bush had those alleged "town hall" meetings where the audience was carefully chosen and the questions carefully planned and very few people called him on that...

  • [49] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:35AM

YES! America is going to vote for O-Ba-Ma because they will want a CHANGE from Ms. Laura Bush- and have a cranky and irascible woman for America's First Lady... no matter what 'color' she is!

  • [50] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:35AM

Jesse - REALITY is that THERE ARE FLAWS WIth our country and that people can misspeak from time to time - This is a woman putting her life and her children's lives at risk for a cause. This is a woman who has seen the historical injustice first hand agains her family, but she is willing to look at the potential and the positive in people.

Being PROUD of your Country is NOT ROBOTIC IGNORANCE AND UNQUESTIONING OF THE BAD THINGS your country does -

Being PROUD and LOVING your Country means trying to make it better and contributing to the well being..

If you have Children do you show your PRIDE AND LOVE of them by SAYING THEY ARE PERFECT AND NOT CORRECTING WHEN THEY MISBEHAVE AND NOT PUSHING FOR THEM TO GET AN EDUCATION BECAUSE THEY ARE PERFECT THE WAY THEY ARE?

  • [51] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 10:36AM

    Leo

"it was reported very widely in the media" is not a source

  • [52] Chris O from New York City June 13, 2008 - 10:39AM

Paulo #47 - I disagree only because Bush was thoroughly mocked for those appearances. It was well-known they were gimmicks and hand picked audiences and as I recall it was reported that way.

Now we hear how good McCain is at town halls (which he is), how he challenged Obama to 10 town hall meetings (which I think is great) and now he had a town hall meeting in New York City. How bold! Except no one I heard, except you, reported that it was closed!

  • [53] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:39AM

JESSE - People can be DIFFERENT - Laura bush is a decent woman and has played a submissive role in public - No one critizes her for that and she is fine - What is wrong with another professional woman going out there and making a case for her husband.

Where do you get those characterizations about Michelle Obama from? Fox news? - You obviously are very PROUD of yourself that you feel you are perfect so have never bothered to educate yourself

  • [54] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:40AM

The REALITY is: O-Ba-Ma is going to lose in the general Election- ...and he is going to lose huge!

America's Silent Majority will see to it!

  • [55] Nicole June 13, 2008 - 10:41AM

    #38 -- I completely agree!

The reason people are so pulled into the 08 election is that they are so fed up with GWB, Cheney and all their lies... They misled the public, got us all into this war that cannot be won or even withdrawn from without leaving us worse off than we even are now. And all the while doing everything they can to trample the bill of rights (ie. Guantanamo, illegal wiretapping of phone lines).

Not to mention that they have completely ignored most domestic issues over the last 8 years.

It's incredible to me that more people are not calling for impeachment. How come that never makes it to the news?? Brian??

  • [56] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:41AM

hjs Post #50 - I will get you the links!

Though Hillary is a decent woman, she surrounded herself with some sleazy characters who had a very coordinated agenda of instilling fear. The good thing about Hillary not being the nominee is that the people she would have brought with her would have been sleazier than the criminal mafia Bush brought with him.

    #46.....

Katie I think we all want "change" but if you really think that Obama is going to come in and all of a sudden everything is going to be happy and merry, im sorry but you are delusional.

Obama will not pull out of Iraq, heck he might even go into Pakistan or even Iran.

Obviously you can vote for anyone based on any reason that you have be it moronic or not. (im not calling your reasons moronic)

I for one have no one to vote for, because to me Obama is playing the crowd, I am not falling for the smooth talker, because it is that just talk.

I guess i will not vote, this term and wait to see how much damage the next president will do to the country.

  • [59] kevin June 13, 2008 - 10:42AM

all this talk about the media obama bias... have you stopped to think that it's because the other candidate is obviously a bad choice?

media's job isnt to give every point equal time, it is to find and report on the facts/truth, and present reasoned contextual analysis.

  • [60] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 10:49AM

And now an interesting discussion on 'Plants- and their feeling'!

    ONLY on WNYC!!

  • [61] kevin June 13, 2008 - 10:49AM

mccain is pushing the gas tax holiday and slags off economists. seriously? is it ok that a presidential candidate would make decisions on our collective economic futures without economists and other specialists?

how can i take him seriously when he talks i just hear gimmicks. has he said how he plans to reduce the cost of health insurance in any detailed way? all i hear is "lower corporate taxes" ad nauseum.

also, there is a difference between the corporate tax barackets and the EFFECTIVE TAX rate. isnt there? can the "biased" media talk about that some more.

  • [62] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 10:50AM

#53 - Yes Jesse - the "Silent majority' Will do it by keeping people ignorant and spreading smear like you - people are much smarter than that and they will not be manipulated by your appeal to ignorance, prejudices and fear.

People are tired of the SCUM like you that has controlled this country with fear - This country is in serious problems, despite it's people, potential and wealth, because of the criminal, ignorant scum like you that controls power in this country

  • [66] chestinee June 13, 2008 - 11:00AM

the media (and now sadly NPR) are in the business of advertising, not in teh business of news - taht is secondary, a vehicle. the point is advertising dollars. So Jeremiah Wright coverage is about that.

  • [67] JT from NYC June 13, 2008 - 11:01AM

    Mr. Ca-Li-Fa-No:

    Turn off your radio.

You need some fresh air and exercise!

  • [68] acs from bklyn June 13, 2008 - 11:05AM

    Jesse

I think the "really" IS an important qualifier for someone in their forties (such as myself and Michelle Obama). I grew up with parents who espoused "pride of country" unthinkingly. I recall in my very cynical teems as (Iran/Contra was all over TV) a high-school teacher discussing carrying a photo of JFK around with her when she was a girl, and thinking that admiring a president in that way was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard. Growing up through the 70s 80s 90s to now, tell me what or whom I should have been "really" proud of or inspired by? Who should I have admired? Watching a large percentage of the American people rally around an inspiring African-American candidate is something I wouldn't have thought possible growing up and it does make this 40-year-old white woman "really" proud in a way I never have been. I can only imagine how proud it has made Michelle Obama.

  • [69] Richard from Texas June 13, 2008 - 11:08AM

Mrs Obama did say she wasn't proud of America until her husband became a nominee. I saw the news clip.

    - Fresh Idea #1: Escalating the Vietnam War (370,000 + American casualties)?

    - Fresh Idea #2: Like invading Cuba (Bay of Pigs)

    - Fresh Idea #3: Like ordering the CIA to back a coup against the legitimate government in Iraq and install the Baath party (and subsequently Saddam Hussein)

"with Obama and it has nothing to do with race."

    - This is in direct contradiction to your original assertion that his ethinicity is the deciding factor in your support.

"I want a rough man from Chicago for President"

    - Obama's biography states he didn't move to Chicago until 1985 when he was 23 or 24 years old. So I'm not sure how he's 'from' Chicago. Additionally, it's fascinating how you equate his middle class upbringing and Harvard graduate education with being "rough".

'claims he (McCain) is too "disabled."'

    - John McCain was tortured and had has his arms broken several times over the course of his five year imprisonment in Vietnam. He has trouble raising his arms today as a direct result from that experience. Please render to us all your enlightened definition of disabled.

    #46 cont'd...

"This is not toy soldiers game, this is running a nation and hot seat of International politics."

    - Senator Obama had one year of Senate experience before he started running for President. Senator McCain has been serving in the Congress since 1983. Please educate me and others in how one year of Senate experience over qualifies someone with 24 years of the same?

Additionally, it's interesting how you view the candidate with military experience as a 'toy soldier'. Surely the self described 'community organzier' is the 'real soldier' not a 'toy' one.

I understand your frustration when confronted with facts.

It's called a 'hang over'. Most Obama supporters will experience it when the party is over in November.

My advice, take some tylenol and get an education.

    br - lol

    great posts!

    obama has:

-little experience AND poor judegement - ex:

-he babbles about change - but as we have seen from his poor judgement in choosing jim johnson - obama is all about the same old washington insider money policis

  • [75] acs from bklyn June 13, 2008 - 11:34AM

    Richard,

This has become a bit boring at this point but the "really" was in there when she said it (I've seen the footage of the actual speech) and removed when certain news and web outlets replayed it. What does that tell you?

  • [76] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 11:34AM

Bill-ary was nothing more than a 'Political Opportunist' who was trying to graduate to becoming a 'Political Hack'-

O-Ba-Ma is a 1/2 term Senator out of the cesspool that is Chicago Politics, who is trying to jump start his political career as a 'Political Opportunist'- so that he can then try to advance himself into the class of 'Political Hack'-

Now Senator McCain- who has NEVER initiated an 'earmarked' budget item- he is neither a Political Opportunist OR Political Hack.

Clearly, Senator McCain is motivated by his love and dedication to America, and to doing the very best he can for ALL of it's citizens!

This is the 'Reality' that will prevail in November!

  • [77] Richard from Texas June 13, 2008 - 11:36AM

    I have to ask myself;

Would I vote for a black president? Definately

Would I vote for a democrat? As long as the candidate didn't find it necessary to follow the pro-death(abortion)and pro-gay party lines.

Would I vote for Obama? Not a chance in H*%#!!!

  • [78] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 11:38AM

"mccain has been in the senate since 83"

i won't brag about that. what has he done for the country. we are in a pit dug by reaganism.

    thanks!

  • [79] Iphie June 13, 2008 - 11:43AM

    Andrea,

You seemed surprised at the documented misogyny directed at Hillary Clinton when you recently saw examples of it. That surprises me. What did you think the millions of women (and men) who have been outraged at the treatment of Clinton were angry about? Did you think we were making it up? You recently did a Clinton "retrospective" and didn't deem it important enough to research the enormous bias in the media and what part that played in her campaign?

Fine, you don't watch cable news, but you do pay attention to viral videos on the web, right? You didn't see this one from a couple of months ago? http://youtube.com/watch?v=kcdnlNZg2iM

You didn't hear of the comments of Ken Rudin, NPR's political director when he compared Clinton to Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction? You didn't have to go to cable news to hear about that one.

You didn't see the clip of Juan Williams laughing it up with Bill Kristol about what a problem white women are?

You didn't hear Brian Lehrer belittle and dismiss Clinton's comments about the sexism in the campaign? His coverage of Clinton over the past month and a half has been shameful - while it might not have been as blatant as say, Keith Olbermann, it was definitely there.

You really didn't have to go far at all to find examples of the bias and sexism in the media, and that you didn't even try makes me wonder what other obvious and important aspects of your political coverage are missing.

He's been in the Congress since 1983 (elected '82, sworn in '83).

As I'm sure you know, the Congress is composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

John McCain was elected to the House of Representatives before the Senate.

So no, he has not 'been in the senate since 83'.

I am astonished how you feel experience is something to be negatively considered in elected leader selection.

  • [83] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 11:47AM

    Leo

    i'll look them over thanks.

    leo

by the way the drug use was in his book so i'm not sure if u can call that a smear.

  • [85] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 11:50AM

Jesse - McCain has NO Concept of Reality - His idea of country and pride is being a Jock in a boarding school and in the Navy.

He has no knowledge of economics or society and what the different ethnic and racial groups have contributed to this country - He is only a senator because he got himself a trophy wife with Money and because he was tortured - We tend to idolize 'heroes' who have accomplished nothing.

The last I checked 'Earmarks' make about 1% of our budget - That will REALLY go a long way to address our fiscal problems - Is that REALITY?

  • [86] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 11:53AM

hjs - Yes. it was in his book - when he was a teenager - but both of Clinton's surrogates suggested that Republicans would use it against him and suggested that he was a drug dealer and was dealing drugs in the streets of Chicago after graduating from college.

  • [87] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 11:55AM

    Iphie

great list, but we have to move on. the media is not a friend of democracy. HRC didn't run a great campaign. she can again run in 2016

  • [88] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 11:57AM

The 'Reality' is: O-Ba-Ma is going to lose; and to paraphrase Tom Cruise's expression-

    'He's going to lose huge'!

Just add up the Electoral College votes- State-by-State!

So WNYC'ers... -live with THAT 'reality'!

  • [89] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 12:07PM

Jesse- We can ADD - There are 538 Electoral college votes - 270 Electoral votes needed to win. The general election USUALLY OCCURS on the FIRST TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER. (The general election voting is currently NOT HAPPENING). NOW, if you are referring to polls - the latest are

    190 Votes for Obama

    194 for McCain AND

154 Electoral votes up for grabs - based on Polling..

To ALL - The General Election is TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4th - that is when the Electoral College votes are allocated.

    Rasmussen Reports ( A right-wing outlet): has Democracts 190; Republicans 189.

  • [90] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 12:14PM

"Republicans would use it against him"

is that untrue? i think they will use it.

  • [92] Jesse Califano from NYC/ TPA/ June 13, 2008 - 12:40PM

Ah... in 1948- when (good looking) Govenor Dewey was slated to win the Presidency against the (unpopular) President Truman-

    Surprise, Surprise!

    Polls are NOT 'Reality'.

Skewed question result in skewed answers!

  • [93] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 12:44PM

Yes. They will use it against him - but it's disconcerting for Democrats to use the same Republican tactics of fear to undermine a candidate in order to have the Republicans pick up that same narrative - He admitted he used cocaine and pot- for Democrats to insinuate he is a drug dealer and to keep that narrative I find offensive

  • [94] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 12:49PM

Precisely. Polls are not reality. - You can't say to add up the electoral college as NO VOTING has occured.. Therefore, you can't say he is going to lose until the election takes place

  • [95] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 12:55PM

    leo

think of it as a vaccine then against GOP attacks

    Jesse

what does ur crystal ball say about the stock market?

  • [96] Leo Queens from Queens, NY June 13, 2008 - 12:56PM

Jhs: :-) I guess one can think of it that way - It's better that it was brought up earlier and that it had no traction

  • [99] hjs from 11211 June 13, 2008 - 02:19PM

    Jesse,

thinking people can learn from past mistakes. 2004 bush victories are no guarantee for mccain. besides polls taken today offer more insight then voting results of 4 years ago.

  • [100] Richard from Texas June 13, 2008 - 03:15PM

I have learned from past mistakes. Eight years of Slick Willie Clinton has been worse for me than eight years of George W Bush.
