In the remote Israeli Bedouin village of Al-Sayyid, an unusually high percentage of the population is deaf. Everyone in the village - whether or not they're hearing impaired - communicates in a unique, local form of sign language. New York Times reporter Margalit Fox followed researchers into the village to explore the connection between language and the human brain. Her new book is Talking Hands.
