    Finnish Finish

For many Finnish musicians, national identity can be both a blessing and a curse — a blessing because the small country boasts such an immensity of outlets for classical music; a curse because performers are almost obliged to perform works composed by fellow Finns. Throughout her distinguished career, the mezzo-soprano Monica Groop has avoided such typecasting. She is best known for her performances of Baroque repertory, and this week she’ll be appearing with the New York Philharmonic in Berlioz's seldom-performed “L'Enfance du Christ.” Also on the show is New York composer Beth Anderson, known for her neo-romantic, listen-friendly music. She’ll discuss her work in light of an upcoming all-Anderson concert at Weill Recital Hall, and will be joined in the studio by pianist Joseph Kubera, who will perform selections of her music.

    Your "Democracy Song"

    Soundcheck

As we march toward Election Day, Soundcheck wants you to identify a song that captures the spirit of democracy. It might be Woody Guthrie’s populist classic “This Land Is Your Land” or Sly and the Family Stone’s funky hit “Everyday People.” It might even be a current Top 40 hit with mass appeal. Put on your musical thinking cap, get creative, then post your song here.
