The 18th annual GLBT Expo is taking place this weekend at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Midtown Manhattan. Some 200 exhibitors are attending the tradeshow to introduce new products to the gay and lesbian community, and to meet potential buyers face to face.
Sharmayne Wesler helps to coordinate the Expo. She says that vendors appreciate the opportunity to market products directly to the gay community -- which tends to be affluent and brand-loyal -- and that attendees appreciate the special attention.
“The value for the gay community is that they’re recognized and they’re honored that people are asking for just them as customers, so its kind of a special thing. We have tourism companies, we have some spirits companies that do a little sampling, even Circle Line Sightseeing is here,” Wesler says. “We have some spas, we have Master Card…so it’s a potpourri of everyone.”
The expo will also include live entertainment and peer education panels, as well as a large-scale wedding pavilion.
