Combining highfalutin musical tastes with a punk rock attitude, the mobile new music dance party known as the Asphalt Orchestra plays covers in way you’ve never heard them before. The band makes high-octane brass band arrangements of music ranging from Zappa and Bjork to Tyondai Braxton (who used to play with Battles) and Yoko Ono. What unites it all is a remarkable execution of weirdo meters and lightning-fast licks.

The musicality on display is not surprising when you consider that the members are culled from New York music-scene royalty, including jazz bandleader and trombonist Alan Ferber, Red Baraat leader and percussionist Sunny Jain, and Gutbucket composer and saxophonist Ken Thompson, who co-leads the ensemble.

On Wednesday evening at Lincoln Center, catch the group wandering the center’s outdoor plazas as part of the free Out of Doors concert series.
