This is a news conference tape concerning a recent uptick in crime on the subway and steps taken to ensure the safety of passengers.
600 off-duty police officers have been assigned to work in the subway system, and several hundred transit police are being paid overtime to ride the subway between the hours of 8:00 PM and 4:00 AM, the time span when most crimes occur.
The city also plans to hire 800 new transit employees to combat crime.
A reporter asks if transit fares will go up to pay for all this added security. Mayor Wagner says no, that the money does not come out of the transportation budget. 1,800,000 a month is being spent on this extra emergency security, but Wanger suggests that taxes may go up, but that is a discussion for the state legislature.
15 arrests made were made the night before this press conference. last night, and no felony arrests. No felony, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, and drug possession.
A reporter asks why the real estate tax revenue has fallen so rapidly in recent years. The answer from Mayor Wagner is a bit vague.
