Sidi Touré is one of the musicians playing hypnotic Malian guitar music that was first exposed to the world by Ali Farka Touré. Often called “desert blues” for its perceived similarity to Mississippi Delta music, the sounds are played by the Songhai people who live in Mali’s northern deserts.
As the story goes, Sidi Touré was forbidden from playing the guitar because he came from a noble family. Touré rebelled and learned music anyway, and good thing he did – otherwise we wouldn’t have tracks like Bon Koum, a trance-inducing, minimalist lullaby on undulating acoustic guitar that showcases Touré’s full-figured voice.
