Sidi Toure is one of the musicians forwarding the style hypnotic Malian guitar music first exposed to the world by Ali Farka Toure. Often called “desert blues” for its perceived similarity to Mississippi Delta sounds, the sound is played by the Songhai people who live in Mali’s northern deserts.

 

As the story goes, Sidi Toure was forbidden from playing the guitar because he came from a noble family. Toure rebelled and learned music anyway, and good thing he did – otherwise we wouldn’t have tracks like Bon Koum, a trance-inducing, minimalist lullabye on undulating acoustic guitar and Toure’s full-figured voice.
