The San Antonio, Texas group Girl in a Coma, a nod to The Smiths' song "Girlfriend in a Coma," got a big break six years ago. The all-girl trio -- Jenn Alva, Phanie Diaz and Nina Diaz -- got the chance to play its emotive punk tejano ballads for Joan Jett and her songwriting partner and producer, Kenny Laguna, at the Knitting Factory as part of a TV show featuring unknown bands. Jett and Laguna liked what they heard and signed Girl in a Coma to their label, Blackheart Records.

Since then, the tattooed ladies with stylin' asymmetrical haircuts have released four albums, the most recent of which, Exits & All the Rest, came out just last week. Download the melodic pop song "Smart" from the band's new album or watch the video below. Girl in a Coma plays Brooklyn's Knitting Factory on Thursday night.
