Couples Flock to Brooklyn's First-Ever Gay Wedding Expo

Caterers, photographers, jewelers, professional bakers and many others showed up in Brooklyn Sunday to market to gay couples at what was billed as the borough's first gay wedding expo.

About 75 businesses took part in the expo organized by the Brooklyn Community Pride Center organized.

Andromeda Beharry, 27, attended the event with her partner to plan wedding next fall. Beharry said she had no idea where to start, and had come seeking ideas.

"It's kinda nice being able to be a little girl planning your wedding," Beharry said. "I never thought I could so it's really cool doing this. It's a nice experience."

Frank Jones, with gay wedding planning company High Fidelity New York, said when it became legal for gays to marry in New York last year, he  expanded his business to include gay weddings.

"What we're finding is a majority of our business, it's couples from big cities that are coming here because they don't have marriage equality in their own states," Jones said at the expo.

For some businesses, like wedding gown designers, a gay couple could double the business.

"We've had some fun traditional women brides that didn't want to see each other so we'd schedule their appointments separately," said Charlene Spence from Michelle New York in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. "It's very exciting. It's double the fun."
