2 World Trade Design Unveiled

2 WTC Building Looking UP

The Danish architectural firm BIG revealed on Tuesday designs for 2 World Trade, the last tower at the massive site that was once home to the twin towers destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

In a video, international star architect Bjarke Ingels describes the skyscraper as a vertical village of singular buildings, each stacked on top of each other, that would complement Tribeca and the trade center site, as the building lies on the edge of both neighborhoods.

The tower is slated to be home to Rupert Murdoch's media companies 21st Century Fox and The News Corporation.

"While we have a lot of work ahead of us, I am thrilled to partner with 21st Century Fox, News Corp and Bjarke Ingels Group in creating a new architectural icon on what will be Downtown’s fully restored skyline,” said Larry Silverstein, chairman of Silverstein Properties and developer of the site.

The building is expected to be completed by 2021.

The design details were first reported by Wired magazine.
