City Council - District 8
In the open seat in East Harlem and the South Bronx, Diana Ayala had strong support from Mott Haven in the Bronx, where there's a lot of fear about gentrification and a very active opposition to current development plans. That race was interesting in other ways, too. Effectively, there were two incumbents running for the seat — Ayala as Mark-Viverito's hand-picked successor and with de Blasio's backing. But Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez also ran for the seat. Not surprisingly, his strongest support was in the part of his assembly district that overlaps with the City Council district.
