This summer, poet, author and songwriter Patti Smith released her first album of new material since 2004, Banga. The record takes its name from Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov's book The Master And Margarita, and it's a collection of 12 songs that brim with literary, religious, historical and musical references. There are also a few songs that tribute to many of Smith's friends, including "This Is The Girl," a song that honors Amy Winehouse.
Smith dropped by our studio to talk about the making of the album, appearing in Jean-Luc Godard's Film Socialisme, and we find out what she gave Johnny Depp for his birthday this year.
