Homeowners hardest-hit by Hurricane Sandy may eligible for deferred tax payments as well as a possible rebate.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn hope to get the council's approval for about 3,000 homeowners to delay their quarterly or semi-annual payment until April.

The deferment would push back approximately $1.5 million for city coffers.

Additionally, city officials say they will ask Albany to allow the city to provide tax rebates for some 900 properties assessed in May of this year damaged by the storm. The rebates would result in an estimated $760,000 returned to homeowners.

"These two tax relief measures will, taken together, provide some help for New Yorkers who really need it and need it now, but for the rest of us, it's not going to require us to change our strategy or raises taxes whatsoever," Bloomberg said.

Quinn said she anticipates the council will take up the tax deferral proposal at the next meeting on December 10.
