LICH Keeps Losing Patients As Court Order is Appealed

SUNY Downstate is discharging patients and diverting ambulances from Brooklyn's Long Island College Hospital despite a temporary restraining order. SUNY says it is still diverting because it filed an intent to appeal the order.

LICH paramedic George Bazares, 55, says he hasn't been allowed to drop patients off at the hospital. He’s taking them to neighboring facilities in Brooklyn that he says are getting overcrowded.

But SUNY argues it is unsafe for patients to be taken to LICH. They say the hospital with about 15 remaining patients is understaffed because workers have voluntarily departed.

Paramedics and nurses argue there is a full staff and not enough patients.
