It's the most wonderful time of the month - the showcasing of new releases! On this New Sounds program, listen to music for sax quartet and percussion, music for sax and synth by Jonah Parzen-Johnson, and music that lands squarely between jazz & classical by guitarist/composer Diego Barber, who is from the Canary Islands.
From the Philadelphia-based saxophone quartet, PRISM, working with the percussion group, So Percussion, listen to a work in non-standard tuning by Princeton composer and electric guitarist, Steve Mackey – “Blue Notes.” Listen to music by sax player and composer Jonah Parzen-Johnson, who although he’s now Brooklyn-based, thinks of himself proudly as a “product of Chicago” who was mentored by south side musicians in “Creative Music.” Listen to a work for synth and sax by Parzen-Johnson, along with music for guitar, supported by fantastic percussion, bass & drums, by Diego Barber named for a mountain in the Sierra Nevada range in Spain, “Trevenque.”
Hear electronic compositions by the duo Quindar from their debut album built upon archival recordings of NASA’s from the 1960s and 70s, which have been tweaked and manipulated beyond recognition and blended with analog synths. Then, listen to new music from Ireland’s Crash Ensemble – a work by Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurdsson. Plus, film music arranged by Bill Frisell and bass player Thomas Morgan, and more.
