Listen to some western music based on classical music forms from other parts of the world including music inspired by the Andalusian orchestras of Northern Africa, Indonesian gamelan, gagaku orchestras of Imperial Japan, and by the classical ragas of India.
Hear Rudresh Manhanthappa’s Indo-Pak Coalition, a New York-based trio with guitarist Rez Abbasi and drummer/percussionist Dan Weiss, from the forthcoming record, Agrima, which is Sanskrit for “next” or “following.” Listen to some of their music based on Indian classical forms- both the Alap, the improvised part featuring the solo instrument. This is usually performed without drums and explores the scale to be used within a piece. Once the Alap is done, then one hears the song - or the Raga – the composed part of the work. Hear both "Alap" and "Snap" from Rudresh Manhanthappa’s Indo-Pak Coalition, featuring all kinds ofd interactions between alto saxophone, jazz-rock electric guitar, drum kit & tabla.
There’s also by Norwegian composer-keyboardist Jon Balke and Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui that takes as its starting point the Andalusian orchestras of Northern Africa. This ingenious “intergalactic ensemble” also combines Algerian violinist Kheir Eddine M’Kachiche, American trumpeter Jon Hassell, and Norwegian violinist Bjarte Eike’s period group Barokksolistene for stunning music made at the crossroads of all: pre-Renaissance and baroque music, spacious northern jazz, and Andalusian Gharnati song. And, hear some music from the Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum (also Oum Kalsoum, Umm Kulthum) played with a traditional Arabic Orchestra, which also incorporated western strings.
Then, hear music inspired by both Steve Reich and Javanese gamelan music of Indonesia from David Lopato – an epic combination of minimalism and improvised music- featuring keyboards, vibes, and cello- together with traditional gamelan music. Listen to Japanese composer Sukeyasu Shiba and his Reigakusha ensemble who use gagaku instruments employed in imperial court music of Japan to play contemporary original music. Plus, hear bandleader & composer Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol who writes in both contemporary classical and jazz but draws heavily from Turkish influences. Hear music rooted in the Sufi devotional tradition with his band Whatsnext? and their ""Niyaz" Suite - II. An Afro Semai."
