#4040: New Sounds Live 2017: Ben Neill's "Manitoga" from Brookfield Place
From the New Sounds Live concert series, recorded earlier this month, hear music by composer, instrument inventor, and brass player, Ben Neill. Listen to the New York City premiere of "Manitoga" (2014), composed for Neill's mutantrumpet and an ensemble of four players using the artist Carol Szymanski’s brass sculptures as musical instruments.
"Manitoga" is an environmental composition for the hybrid electro-acoustic instrument mutantrumpet, and brass ensemble playing Phonemophone Alphabet Horns created by artist Carol Szymanski. (Each instrument forms a letter of the alphabet in a font of her design.) Using the reverb qualities of the cathedral-like interior of Brookfield Place, Neill’s mutantrumpet served as the controller for processing the other horns in the shapes of the letters that spell “Manitoga.”
