#4041: New Releases, October 2017

ensemble, at al.

It's the most wonderful time of the month - the (spooky) showcasing of new releases! On this New Sounds program, listen to the pick of the piles, the cream of the crop. Listen for music by Empyrean Atlas, Ensemble et al, Brass Menažeri without Mr. Lif, Turkish clarinet master Cüneyt Sepetçi, Emily Pinkerton & NOW Ensemble, and Swedish-Finnish trio Folk’Avant.

Listen to new music from percussion group Ensemble et al, a Brooklyn-based band who make instrumental music with vibraphone, keyboards, drums, and percussion. With roots as a new-music chamber ensemble, on its latest, The Slow Reveal, the group combines elements of rock, modal jazz, electronica, contemporary classical, and experimental music, and adds special sauce from producer/engineer John McEntire. Hear “Ellipsis” from  Ensemble et al. Then, hear music drawing on minimalism & West African music from Empyrean Atlas, who on their latest, Poly Rush, believe that “polyrhythms are the answer, except when simple, unison guitar lines will do.”

There’s also music from Italian guitarist Pino Forastiere, along with the kantele, violin and vocals of Swedish-Finnish trio Folk’Avant. Listen to the latest from NOW Ensemble in collaboration with singer/banjoist Emily Pinkerton.  On the record, Rounder Songs, traditional songs and lyrics from Appalachia were re-composed for Pinkerton to sing and play banjo with NOW Ensemble in an old-timey Americana meets post-minimalist classical music song cycle.

Then, hear clarinet-led music in a Malian song, “Kenedougou Foly” arranged for the Anat Cohen Tentet. Listen also to the virtuoso clarinetist Cüneyt Sepetçi in Turkish wedding and party music from his latest, Bulgar Gaydasi out on L.M. Dupli-cation (a label run by Jeremy Barnes of Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut, and A Hawk and a Hacksaw.) Plus, Balkan brass party music by Brass Menažeri from their intriguing and wonderful collaborative record with the rapper Mr. Lif. This tune, “Doppio Macchiato” contains plenty of caffeine, but it's one of the instrumentals (no Mr. Lif) from their record, Resilient. Music by This Will Destroy You for the new Los Angeles restaurant experience Vespertine rounds out the show.
