Hear music for massed voices, all of them female, for this edition of New Sounds. There's a choral work by Iranian-born Sahba Aminikia for the San Francisco Girls Chorus along with music by Montreal-based electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, plus music by John Zorn and Brian Eno.
Iranian-born Sahba Aminikia came to the U.S. in 2006 as a refugee, and belongs to one of Iran’s religious minority groups, the Baha’i. His “Music of Spheres,” commissioned by Kronos Quartet for Kronos Quartet and the San Francisco Girls Chorus, is based on Persian lullabies and uses the recorded voices of two dozen Afghan students of the Afghanistan National Music Institute in addition to the SFGC. The work is on the forthcoming record by San Francisco Girls Chorus, Final Answer, due out February 16 on Orange Mountain Music label.
Then, hear music by Montreal-based electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, who on her 2017 record, All my Circles Run, has created pieces for overdubbed layers of same instrument. Listen to her work, “For Voice,” with multiple layers of Camille Hesketh’s voice. There’s another work featuring the San Francisco Girls Chorus, which celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year by composer, producer, performer, and record label founder John Zorn. Brian Eno’s “Music for Airports” closes the show.
