Listen to collaborative music from the Indian-Scottish-English folk trio Yorkston/Thorne/Khan, Baltimore-based sitarist and ambient music composer Ami Dang, and a raga from S. African guitarist Guy Buttery and sitar player Kanada Narahari.
Hear a kind of hybrid Indian-Scottish-English folk music from collaborative trio of James Yorkston, Jon Thorne, and Suhail Yusuf Khan. Each contributes vocals to material both original and reimagined as Khan, on sarangi (a box-shaped cello from India), Thorne, on double bass, and Yorkston, principally on guitar, all improvise within their mutual space. Hear “Westlin’ Winds” from their record, Navarasa: Nine Emotions.
Then, hear music by Ghazalaw, a duo of Mumbai singer Tauseef Akhtar and Welsh singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn. It’s their arrangement of a Welsh tune with lyrics sung in both Punjabi and Welsh, merging their two ancient traditions together to the accompaniment of harp, tabla, guitar and harmonium.
Also, listen to “salty and humid invocations stretched between India and South Africa” from sitarist Kanada Narahari and guitarist Guy Buttery, who play nicely together in a long-form raga intended to be performed at midnight. Then, hear music by Baltimore-based Amrita “Ami” Kaur Dang, a South Asian-American vocalist, sitarist, and ambient music composer from Baltimore. Ami Dang fuses sitar, voice, and electronics to create in a piece called “Raiments.” Plus, hear music by London-based band Uniting Of Opposites where Indian classical music and jazz forms collide. - Caryn Havlik
