Somewhere in the cross section of the Venn diagram of pop music and classical music exists a genre of cross-over music that will be featured during today's episode of New Sounds -- this is what it sounds like when pop meets classical.
Hear classical six-piece ensemble yMusic team up with the songwriter Emily King for some orchestral pop-soul music, Yasiin Bay, FKA Mos Def, performs a classic track with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and hear rapper Dessa accompanied by the Minnesota Orchestra.
Danish band Efterklang, made up of the 3 childhood friends Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen & Rasmus Stolberg, employ a chamber orchestra and a small chorus on their album Altid Sammen, and German composer, pianist and producer Martin works with the GewandhausChor, which did not use traditional notation, instead each singer was free to take individual creative initiatives.
