Hear new music featuring the next generation: Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Young People’s Chorus, and the 10th-grade class at Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School collaborating with Nathalie Joachim. Plus, listen to new music from the UC-Santa Cruz Wind Ensemble and the Grand Valley State New Music Ensemble.
There’s music from the Grammy-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus, led by Dianne Berkun Menaker, who have collaborated with Bryce Dessner, Caroline Shaw, and singer/songwriter/guitarist Toshi Reagon (Sweet Honey in the Rock.) From the YPC’s Silent Voices project, hear “Brooklyn Bound” by Toshi Reagon, a piece “that explores the complexity and injustice of gentrification, a topic which is frighteningly urgent in her Crown Heights neighborhood,” (Helga Davis.) Also, listen to music from Transformation, an album created by the 10th-grade class at Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School in collaboration with Grammy-nominated flutist, composer, vocalist Nathalie Joachim. The music was made from a self-generated sound bank of musical material, with small groups working via Zoom to create new pieces that represent their interpretations of "transformation.”
Then, hear new music created during quarantine by the UCSC Wind Ensemble during the spring of 2020, a work called “Isotropes” by American composer and leader of the Lightbulb Ensemble, Brian Baumbusch. The members of the UCSC Wind Ensemble (and UCSC faculty) chose from a collection of fragmented patterns and click tracks, which they then recorded remotely. Also, listen to music featuring the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (dir. Francisco Núñez) and Kronos Quartet in “Exalted” by Michael Gordon from the recent record Clouded Yellow. Plus, a work from the Grand Valley State New Music Ensemble, part a collection of pieces about different national parks, Dawn Chorus. Listen to Ashley Stanley’s work, “Night Sketches,” inspired by and premiered in Arches National Park. -Caryn Havlik
