Listen to cosmic, metaphysical music that plays with light and shadow with work from New York-based Lithuanian composer Zibuokle Martinaityte. The work, Ex Tenebris Lux, is scored for string orchestra, including four cellos and two basses, which dwells for a long time at the dark and deep end of the orchestral pool. But, as the Latin title suggests, “from darkness comes light,” there comes light (and perhaps normal life after the pandemic) on the horizon, and the strings grow from shadows to a radiant shimmer.
Hear “Lux” by British-born US-based composer Jane Antonia Cornish. Her piece is along-form spacious sound structure created from acoustic instruments like Vicky Chow’s piano but stretched with electronics. Then, listen to ancient music of Scandinavia, from a descriptively-titled record, ICE and LONGBOATS, by Sweden’s Ensemble Mare Balticum, part of the European Music Archaeology Project (EMAP), which imagined the instruments Vikings played and the voices they sang with.
