Pathos Trio

Hear the combination of percussion and electronics in works performed by Brooklyn-based Pathos Trio, by Jlin with Third Coast Percussion and music from South African collective IzangoMa.

Brooklyn-based Pathos Trio is two percussionists, Marcelina Suchocka and Felix Reyes, with keyboardist/composer Will Healy whose acoustic chamber music may lean toward progressive/black metal, minimalism, and electronic synthwave. The trio’s 2023 album is called Polarity, a collection of works specifically written for the Pathos Trio by several composers whose specialties include darker-hued subgenres of uneasy listening music. Hear a work by guitarist and producer Andrew M. Rodriguez from Polarity, as well as a piece from their 2022 album by percussionist and filmmaker Evan Chapman.

Then, listen to work by the Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer Jlin, who worked with Chicago’s Third Coast Percussion Ensemble on Perspective, a link between dance musics and futurist Afro-American electronics, (Boomkat.) There’s also music by the experimental 15 piece collective of Mozambican and South African musicians based in Pretoria, called IzangoMa, which gleefully mixes township rhythms like pantsula and bubblegum all with a nod to Sun Ra into music meant for dancing, in both acoustic and electronic sources.

Plus, listen to a piece that combines ambient electronic music and the hypnotic atmosphere of Javanese Gamelan by Irish composer Linda Buckley. Her 2016 work, “Ekstasis”  uses vibraphone, Thai gongs and electronics and features percussionist Joby Burgess from his record, Pioneers of Percussion. And more. -Caryn Havlik
