#4994, New Releases, March 2025

Anoushka Shankar

Hear music by sitarist Anoushka Shankar; post-minimalist chamber jazz from Vega Trails; new sample-based music from JLIN; and Kyle Sanna’s live coding meets new chamber music.

There’s new music from Anoushka Shankar, the sitarist, composer, and collaboraor (who is also the daughter of Ravi Shankar, perhaps the most famous Indian classical musician of the past century). While she does indeed play Indian ragas in the style of her illustrious dad, she has also drawn on jazz, flamenco, various world and electronic music traditions, and more. Her new record, We Return To Love, is the conclusion of a trilogy of EP’s and was developed, written, and performed with Sarod player Alam Khan (son of the sarod maestro, Amjad Ali Khan) and percussionist/composer Sarathy Korwar (Gig Alert 3/26, John Schaefer.) Hear music from the latest EP.

Then, listen to chamber-jazz from Vega Trails, the project from double-bassist and composer Milo Fitzpatrick, a founder member of Portico Quartet. There’s an expansive warmth at play on the latest album, Sierra Trails, conceived at his new home near the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains north-west of Madrid. Also, hear new music by guitarist and composer Kyle Sanna, from his recent record, Everything Again Is New which could be described as live coding meets contemporary chamber music.

Plus, Gary, Indiana-based electronic musician, composer, and producer JLIN crafts samples of adding machine, wire-tying machine, Irish harp, and soybeans from Sydney's Powerhouse museum on a new multimedia release. Also, there’s music from Oslo-based Maouzoun موزون, the project of Syrian oud player Shble Saleem and Norwegian violinist Inger Hannisdal, rooted in Arabic musical forms and rhythms, but which also blends modern and Norwegian folk influences. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
