Under the direction of Thomas Scherman, the Little Orchestra Society was organized in 1947 to "revive the smaller-sized ensemble for which many of the great early composers wrote,"* as well as to bring new works of "unusual" music to the public. The Society's inaugural concert was held at Town Hall in New York City on October 27, 1947.
Two seasons into the concert series, the idea was conceived of giving a dress rehearsal concert just a few days prior to the Town Hall appearances. These concerts enlisted the services of music commentator, David Randolph, who spoke about each of the works while seated at a table to one side of the orchestra. A series of eight rehearsal concerts were held to capacity crowds in the Great Auditorium of Hunter College throughout the early 1950s.
The WNYC Archives collection of Little Orchestra Society recordings consists primarily of these rehearsal concerts.
